Roguedle

About

Roguedle is a free daily roguelite with the dungeon taken out and the build left in. Every day there is one run, the same for everyone: seven rooms, three strange items in each, and you take one from every room. Then the pile you made fights a gauntlet of eight monsters on its own, and your score is how many of them fell before you did.

How to play

Each room offers three items on pedestals, with their effects written out in plain words: more damage, more shots a volley, a burn or a venom on every hit, a little armour, health back each beat, or a big upside with a cost. Take one within ten seconds, or the room takes the leftmost for you, and your hero walks to the next room. Your sheet of stats updates under the room as you go.

Every item carries a one-word tag, such as FIRE, GLASS or SWARM, and certain combinations of tags do something extra: a synergy, stamped across the page the moment a pick completes one. Two FIRE items feed each other's burn; a GLASS pair is a glass cannon; a tower of three SWARM items blots out the sky. The stats are shown; the synergies are found. On your first day you pick on stats alone. After a few you are drafting toward a combo you have seen before, and the day the rooms finally allow it is the day worth sharing.

After the seventh room comes the gauntlet: eight bosses in a row, each bigger than the last and each with a quirk. The fight is automatic, beat by beat: your shots fly, burn and venom tick, the boss swings back, armour shrugs some of it off, and a boss that dies bursts into ink before the next slides in. Your health carries from boss to boss. When it reaches zero the run ends, and your score is the bosses slain plus the share of the next one you took down. A perfect run clears all eight.

You get three runs a day at the same dungeon, and it changes at midnight in your own time zone. The rooms and the bosses don't move between runs, so whatever ended your first run is something to build against in your second; your best run of the day is the one that counts. Everyone gets the same rooms and the same bosses, so when you finish you see how your best compares with everyone else's, and you can copy a result to share. Once a day is over everywhere in the world it goes into the archive, with the rooms, the gauntlet, the best run anyone made and the best run that was possible.

The fight is fair

The gauntlet is decided by the seven items you took and nothing else. The dice rolls for critical hits and dodges are fixed by the day and the build, so the same picks always give the same fight, and the server replays it from your picks to score the run. There is no luck to retry and no way to post a score you didn't earn.

Who makes it

Roguedle is an independent project with no company behind it, built and run by one person, who also makes Tallordle and Bracketdle. The drawings are in the style of, and partly from, Kenney's Scribble Dungeons pack, which is in the public domain. If something is broken or unfair, or you have an idea, write to hello@roguedle.com.
